5 Jumpstart Steps for Career Trailblazing
May 6, 2008 – 5:48 pmTo be successful in today’s career market means being marketable, the best way to be marketable is to take a trailblazing attitude about your career and work. What does it mean to be a trailblazer? It means to do something new, swim-in-waters over your head, venture out and take risks, and the rewards can be many.
Here are five simple jumpstart steps for getting your trailblazing career started:
Find out what business problem or issues your company is having, take the initiative, be the first to come up with a plan to solve them. Even if this isn’t your responsibility or job, who says you can’t contribute. If you have the perfect idea to solve the problem, go for it!
Do something new or go further than you’ve gone before. Take a new class, read a new book, go out to lunch with someone you don’t know very well. Open up your mind to all possibilities, expanding yourself with new experiences that can lead to something rewarding.
Build an SME network. Maybe you don’t have the skills or knowledge to solve a problem, an alternative is to find an expert who can. Surround yourself with smart, ambitious and positive people! Who’s in your network? Joining LinkedIn is a great place to stay in contact with people you know and grow your contact base.
Become a SME Yourself. If you can’t find an expert, learned it yourself, become a SME, a Subject Matter Expert. Learn how to quickly gather information and facts. Read how others approach their problems and solved them. The Internet has become a self-educating environment including chat boards, developer group forums, social networking sites, postings of case studies and blogs.
Find a Mentor. Having a mentor can really boost your career. A mentor is a great sounding board, can provide you with objective advice and can share their insight from their experiences.
